When "The Simpsons" began in 1990, the internet was not available to the public ("Simpsons" fans have had an online presence since at least 1994), very few people had mobile phones and recent guest star Daniel Radcliffe was still in diapers.
Fox announced the renewal of the iconic series for a 23rd season on Thursday, and executive producer Al Jean said in a press release, "Like many 22-year-olds, THE SIMPSONS is extremely happy remaining at home, on Fox, and hopes it doesn't have to go out into the real world for many years to come."
The longest-running comedy series in history will hit 515 episodes by the time this next season is over.
Now, I once wrote that 500 episodes was a nice round number on which to end, but 515 isn't bad either.
At the same time, there's certainly an argument to be made that a show can go on as long as people want to see it. The ratings have declined in recent years, but it has anchored Fox's Sunday night lineup for a long time, and the most recent "Treehouse of Horror" this past week was equal to "Family Guy" in viewership.
Whether it lasts 515 episodes or 1,015, the show's place in television history cannot be denied. But how long would you like to see it go on?
